Portland - “the town that built Sydney”..and much of NSW, lies between Lithgow and Bathurst. Portland is an historic mining town which was built up around the Portland cement works. It is also the place of the first cement works in Australia, which was opened in 1902. Cement produced at the Portland cement works helped build the city of Sydney and the cement was shipped around Australia until the works closed in 1991.
The Portland, Wallerawang and Cullen Bullen areas in NSW are part of the gateway to the Central West and are ideally located between Oberon, Mudgee, Bathurst, Lithgow and Katoomba, Blackheath in the Blue Mountains. It is only 2 1/2 hours from Sydney, an easy 40 minutes to Bathurst and 30 minutes from Lithgow.
Wallerawang and Cullen Bullen are just down the road and closely associated with Portland.
This area is surrounded by beautiful countryside and has many areas for bushwalking, Lake Wallace for sailing and it is close to Glen Davis, Newnes & Wolgan Valley and the Glow Worm Tunnel, Wollemi National Park and the Gardens of Stone National Park.
