Sunny Corner, originally known as Mitchell, is a small historic gold mining village near Portland.
Nowadays it is surrounded by large pine plantations - the Sunny Corner State Forest.

However back in the 1860's it was a gold mining town with over a dozen crushing machines at its peak. In the 1880's it became NSW's first major silver smelting operation when the Winterton silver reef was discovered.

Around the area you can still find relics of its gold mining past - such as this Stamper Battery on the left.

Getting to Sunny Corner:
If travelling from Portland/Lithgow area,  take the Great Western Highway towards Bathurst to the village of Meadow Flat and turn onto Sunny Corner Road.  At Sunny Corner, take the Dark Corner Road for 3.1km.
The Sunny Corner Cemetery covering some 20 acres had its first burial as early as 1885.  The latest burial being in 1950.
Unfortunately many of the graves have no headstones - but they are enclosed either by concrete surrounds or wrought iron.

If looking for the Cemetery watch for the cemetery sign post as the cemetery is hidden by bush from the road.
Sunny Corner State Forest is also very popular for 4 Wheel Driving groups.
The varied landscapes of lush green forests and naked clearings make for very pleasant driving on the many winding forest tracks.
Several Camp Sites are available -
The Sunny corner camp site- a nice grassed open site.
Mary's Park Camp site is a picturesque site on the side of the road.
The Arboretum is about 1 k past Marys Park on the bathurst side - a smaller area but away from the road.
Marys Park and the Arboretum have no facilities

KTM Sunny Corner Trail Bike Rally, Sunday 18 September 2011
KTM Sunny Corner Trail Bike Rally
Sunday 18 September 2011.
This year's event sees two 60 to 80 Klm loops comprising of some new Trails and the usual easy and hard split sections
catering for all levels of riding ability.
Everyone is welcome to the huge Bonfire that is held on the Saturday night before the ride.
This year the band is Pyg's Of Men who will be rocking the night away .
Once again both loops will be available at the start time of 8:30am on Sunday 18th, this means riders can elect to ride either the southern loop or the northern loop.  The same as last year.  This will ensure a much better ride with only half the field on any one loop at a time, then riding the other loop after lunch.
