Cullen Bullen NSW is located in scenic countryside on the Mudgee Road, (Castlereagh Highway) 168 km north-west of Sydney, 5 km north-east of Portland and 28 km north, north-west of Lithgow.  In the language of the Wiradjuri people, who occupied the district prior to white settlement; the word "cullen bullen" is believed to mean "Lyrebird".
Cullen Bullen is a small village, largely a residential village for workers in the coalmines of the Lithgow Valley and at the Pt Piper and Wallerawang Power Stations
Cullen Bullen has seen many improvements since 2001, when the Tidy Town’s Group was formed.
