Fly Fishers have been coming to the Central Tablelands since the late 1940's. The still water fishing of this area offers some very good fishing. Large Dams and streams available...
Thompson's Creek Dam is the newest dam in the area, competing with Lake Wallace and Lake Lyell for King of the Coxs River dam trio. It has been said that Thommo’s, as it is often called, has certainly built up the credentials and kudos from the many visiting anglers to wear this crown.
In the past year or so the resident brown and rainbow trout at Thommo’s have continued to grow. Many fish are now regularly topping an honest 2kg-plus and their general condition and fitness are a force to be reckoned with on the end of a rod and line.
A power generating plant was built at Wallerawang in the late 1950s, and, in latter years Mt Piper Power Station opened near Portland. These stations created a ready market for the local coal.
Visit the Mt Piper Power Station Energy Expo - small groups of 1 -2 are welcome as well as bus groups.
If you like to combine a picnic and bushwalking, the Williwa Creek Reserve and Picnic Area leads to trails through the Portland Town Common which is 650 acres of natural bushland ideal for bushwalks.

Portland, Wallerawang and Cullen Bullen are surrounded by beautiful country side and are situated in close proximity to a number of National Parks. Several of these valleys are of note not just for their beauty but for the early mining history and relics within them. There are very beautiful wilderness areas of limestone outcrops, precipitous sandstone cliffs, pagoda-like rock formations and a diversity of fauna and flora. Near the Newnes Oil Shale Works remains don't forget to visit the Glow Worm Tunnel. Of course everyone knows about the 'Wollemi Pine' discovered in the Wollemi National Park in 1994 - dating back approx. 100 million years.. Did you also know about the ancient aboriginal rock engravings??
